See AllScilla, small southern Venice ScillaScilla is located on the homonymous headland, which rises to the north of the former capital: the Scilla promontory, jutting out into the Strait of Messina, which was in fact anciently called the Strait of Scilla. According to Greek mythology, Scilla was a sea nymph who was transformed into a monster by Circe out of jealousy while she was bathing in a cove near Zancle (modern Messina); the story is told in the Odyssey.Piazza San Rocco overlooks the panorama of the Strait of Messina. The view embraces Punta Pacì which looks towards Sicily and in the distance some of the Aeolian Islands (Lipari, Panarea and Stromboli), and the Ruffo Castle. The historic center also includes the ancient village of Bastìa, characterized by its low houses overlooking the characteristic alleys.Chianalea, or Piana delle Galee, the name of an ancient boat, is a coastal area located on the northern slope of the cliff that houses the Castle that divides it from Marina Grande. A pleasant feature of the area is the large number of houses built almost all close to the sea, which have earned it the nickname of "little Venice of the South".Points of interest:Piazza San RoccoPunta PacìCastello RuffoChianaleaMarina GrandeThings to do:Visit the Castello RuffoTake a boat trip around the Strait of MessinaSwim in the clear waters of the Tyrrhenian SeaExplore the charming alleys of the historic centerEnjoy the fresh seafood in one of the many restaurantsReggio Calabria Location:Situated on the "toe" of Italy at the foot of the Aspromonte mountains. The Aspromonte mountains reach a height of 1,998 meters (6,555 feet) and include the Gambarie ski resort and natural park.History and Culture:Like many cities in the Mediterranean, Reggio is often considered the center of the Mediterranean Sea.The city has a long and rich history, influenced by many different civilizations.Over the centuries, destructive events (both man-made and natural, such as the 1908 earthquake) have devastated the city. Many works of art and buildings have been lost, but the city still preserves valuable monuments and ancient ruins that testify to its long history.Points of Interest:The Aragonese Castle. The Cathedral (Duomo): the largest sacred building in Calabria. The National Museum: after the one in Berlin, it is the largest and most important museum that preserves finds from Magna Graecia. The museum houses, among other valuable finds, the famous Riace Bronzes: two large statues that - according to the most recent hypotheses - would depict two heroes from the myth of the Seven against Thebes. The Bronzes are Greek (or Magna Graecian) statues from the middle of the 5th century BC.Together with the Charioteer of Delphi, they are considered the only bronze testimonies of the great master sculptors of classical art in Greece and Magna Graecia.Gambarie A paradise for nature loversThe Aspromonte is a true Eden for nature lovers.
